THE SHANNON QUARTET
A Little Bit of Heaven: Early Barbershop Quartet Recordings (1925-1928)
Rivermont BSW-1157
This treasure trove of rare recordings provides an excellent document of the early years of "barbershop" harmony. The Shannon Quartet was formed in 1917, combining the talents of some of the era's brightest singing stars, and the group quickly became a favorite on records, radio, film, and in concert. Noted for their beautiful voice blending and colorful arrangements, they specialized in turn-of-the-century popular songs. While many of their recordings were made by the old acoustic process, this disc collects for the first time most of their electric recordings from the late 1920s that enable the quartet to be heard with greater clarity and tonal richness. CD includes a deluxe 40-page illustrated booklet with extensive notes by Glenn Robison. Selections include: "The Sidewalks of New York," "My Wild Irish Rose," "Sweet Rosie O'Grady," "Red Wing," and 20 others. 73 minutes.
