WEST END JAZZ BAND
Burnin' the Iceberg
Rivermont BSW-2216

The The West End Jazz Band's second Rivermont recording proves again why the WEJB is the nation's premier "sweet and hot" dance band playing jazz and popular music of the 1920s and early '30s. This time around, the band pays homage to some of the lesser-known "hot" dance orchestras of the late 1920s, including Lem Fowler, Harold Austin, Jasper Davis, Joe Steele, Cliff Jackson's Krazy Cats, and Charlie Johnson. There are also favorites like "Button Up Your Overcoat" and "She's Got 'It'" as well as novelties like "Hungry Women" and "Every Night I Bring Her Frankfurter Sandwiches." Other selections evoke the sounds of Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers, McKinney's Cotton Pickers, and the Original Memphis Five, all in the West End Jazz Band's own inimitable style, thanks to leader Mike Bezin's sparkling and refreshing arrangements.

In addition to cornetist Mike Bezin, the West End Jazz Band on this disc consists of Frank Gualtieri on trombone, John Otto on clarinet and alto sax, Leah Bezin on banjo and guitar, Mike Walbridge on tuba, and Andy Schumm playing cornet and drums. The CD comes with a 16-page illustrated booklet with notes by Bryan Wright. 73 minutes.
